Tannery, originally uploaded by catlitten.

In a beginning of a series of ONE PHOTO posts in random whatever-I-feel-like order, we begin with: the tanneries. Fes is known for its tanneries, and as you can see here, this is an old-school operation. The dyes used are all natural, but the natural chemicals that come from them, such as the pigeon poo (really) that is used to soften the leather is filled with ammonia, creating a horrible smell that assaults your senses when you are walking in certain parts of the medina. The lives of the workers who make the leather goods Fes is so known for a significantly reduced because of the harshness of their jobs.
